Workplace safety awards 2002

Two Faculty of Science Workplace Safety Awards have been presented to individuals in 2002 for their significant contributions to the challenging area of field safety. Mr Bruce Weir, from the School of Biological Sciences, and Dr Graeme Beardsmore from the School of Geosciences , have been proactive in the development and implementation of improvements in the management of health and safety during field activities in their respective schools.

Bruce contributed significantly to the initial development of guidelines for health and safety during undergraduate field activities, prepared by the School of Biological Sciences . Bruce ensures that the risk management process is completed for all field activities with which he is associated and that risk control procedures are conscientiously implemented. Acknowledging the need for improvement in this process, Bruce continually strives to modify and develop field safety procedures to ensure their effectiveness and acceptance by all staff.

Graeme has conscientiously applied risk management to the field activities and courses that he has supervised since commencing as a staff member in Geosciences. The comprehensive risk assessments he has submitted to the school safety officer have demonstrated excellent knowledge of School and University guidelines. The risk management process conducted was thorough and completed well in advance of the field activity, thus allowing sufficient time for the application of appropriate risk controls and training of staff attending the activity.

he award includes lunch in the Private Dining Room of the Monash University Club, who generously co-sponsor the lunch with the Faculty of Science.
