Workplace safety awards 2003

The Faculty of Science Workplace Safety Awards for 2003 have been presented to Ms Leesa Hughes in the School of Biological Sciences and to Mr Warren Booth in the School of Chemistry for their significant contributions to improvements in the management of health and safety in the Faculty of Science. These awards are given annually to recognise staff in the Faculty of Science for their vital contribution to improvements in health and safety.

Leesa has demonstrated leadership in improvements in the handling, storage and disposal of field samples in the laboratories in which she provides technical support, which has contributed significantly to the standard of health and safety achieved in the School of Biological Sciences . Under her guidance, house keeping has also improved extensively in these laboratories. Leesa always aims to improve the heath and safety content and practice of the practical classes that she is involved in and she provides first aid assistance as a Level 3 first aider, both on campus and during off-campus activities, a major responsibility during undergraduate field activities.

The award to Warren Booth recognises his conscientious work in the role of first aid coordinator in the School of Chemistry . Warren has been diligent in maintaining up to date lists of current first aiders throughout all areas of the school with the lists being customised to show the nearest first aider to each location. Staff and students have been reminded when training is due, ensuring that they retrain before their qualifications lapse. Cardio-pulmonary resuscitation refresher training has been organised locally maximising the number of people attending. This thorough approach has resulted in the School of Chemistry having significant numbers of first aiders available at all times, a necessity in such a high risk area.

The award includes lunch in the Private Dining Room of the Monash University Club, who generously co-sponsor the lunch with the Faculty of Science.
