Faculty of Science workplace health, safety and environment award 2007

This award is given annually to recognise staff in the Faculty who propose innovative and exciting ideas on how to create, improve or maintain a safe, healthy and environmentally conscious workplace consistent with OHSE policies.

The Faculty of Science Workplace Health, Safety and Environment Award for 2007 has been awarded to Peter Domelow, Peter Arnold and Ian Stewart from the Faculty of Science Workshop.

Workshop staff looked to resolve the issue of exposure to hazardous airborne metal particles, wood dust and welding fumes while working in and visiting the workshop.

The current situation means particles and fumes are released into the immediate environment with opened doors serving as the main source of ventilation. Modifications to an existing dust extractor unit, not currently used to capacity, were proposed including alterations to the ducting and the addition of extra extraction points. Upon completion, these modifications will enable the existing extractor unit to cope with the increased work demand while reducing the amount of pollutants emitted into the environment.

The selection committee would like to thank all those who submitted applications and to sincerely congratulate the successful applicants on proposing an initiative which will have lasting benefits on the environment and the health and safety of staff.
